Thanks to Chef Jon Bonnell and James Pallett at Waters in Ft. Worth, the subject of this month’s Pat’s Pick. We were so glad to eat these oysters after taking pictures of them.

Thanks to Chef Johnny Hernandez at Fruteria in San Antonio for hand modeling for this Dining Guide opener and for the delicious drinks.

Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine

This June 2013 Eat Like a Chef cover story for Southwest Airline’s Spirit magazine included shoots in Austin, Charleston and Oakland, plus a sandwich that was overnighted from Baltimore and reassembled at the studio. This was my second cover story for Spirit - the last a story on restoring the Chesapeake that ran almost a year ago.

In Austin: Thanks to Paul Qui (cover, pg 83) and Deana Saukam for your patience and letting us take pictures of you eating. And to Mike Hong from Chi’lantro for bringing the truck on your day off - and for feeding us. Who knew that Korean/Mexican fusion could be this good?

In Charleston: Thanks to Sean Brock and Jeremiah Langhorne of Husk & McCrady’s for the best one-day food tour ever. We started at Bob Carter’s Rutledge Cab Co. Thanks to Bob and all of the staff for your help. Then on to The Gin Joint for more great food and ridiculous cocktails. Thanks to owner/master bartender Joe Raya and Chris. Next we toured The Bar at Husk, McCrady’s, and finally The Ordinary. We were blown away by everything. Great to be home and see my brother Greg and friends Chris and Jose.

In Oakland: Thanks to Tanya Holland of Brown Sugar Kitchen and B-Side BBQ for all of your time and the tour of Oakland - including chef Dominica Rice-Cisnero’s Cosecha (pg 81) and the great Beauty’s Bagel Bar (shot of bagel above). Thanks too to former Texan Rob Einspruch for helping me find landmarks for the feature opener on Oakland (above).

I was glad to see this image of a glory brisket on the cover of last Saturday’s Off Duty section in the Wall Street Journal. Texas Monthly Food Features

We had three more features in Texas Monthly’s May issue. It was great working with Rene Ortiz from Sway for the Pat’s Pick feature. For Dining Guide, I cannonballed to Lubbock and back in a day to shoot this picture of pie at the Cast Iron Grill. Thanks to the staff there for all the help. And finally, we recipe-tested and shot these barbecued crabs for the Vittles column in my back yard. Thanks to Courtney and Andrea from Texas Monthly for helping and drinking beer with us at 2pm on a Wednesday.

Shooting day-for-night food photos presented some challenges, but Sean Johnson, Kate LeSueur and I pulled it off. Southern Living: Smoke

This feature on Smoke: New Firewood Cooking by Tim Byres is found in the April 2013 issue of Southern Living. It was great working with Tim and his crew. Special thanks to stylist Johanna Lowe and assistant Kate LeSueur for all of their help, and to graphic designer Blair Richardson, who saved the design of this book in the ninth hour.

The book will be released by Rizzoli on April 30. For more information on Tim’s Dallas restaurants - Smoke and Chicken Scratch.

George and Barbara Bush liked the photo I took of them for Garden & Gun (Feb/March 2011 issue) so much that they asked to use it for their Christmas card this year.

It’s hard to believe more than a year has passed since this fun and challenging shoot. Last week G&G included the portrait above (right) within their Top 50 Photos of the year.
